Annual Awards

Awarded to one physician during years when a worthy candidate exists for: an outstanding accomplishment, event, or service, during the preceding calendar year. All candidates must be members of MAOPS. To view a list of past award recipients, click here.

Awarded to one individual during years when a worthy candidate exists to a: young physician (under 10 years of practice), who is nominated by the President, and approved by the Awards Committee and Board of Trustees. These awards are given in recognition of significant service by a physician or a lay person contributing to the: growth, improvement or public or professional recognition of osteopathy in one of the categories below. 1. Auxiliary Medallion: Presented for dedicated service rendered by a member of the Auxiliary to MAOPS.
2. Osteopathic College Medallion: Presented for dedicated service to a Missouri osteopathic college, including administrative, teaching or research-related activities.
3. Hospital Medallion: Presented to a hospital for promotion of osteopathic principles.
4. Professional Medallion: Presented for dedicated service to MAOPS or a MAOPS Osteopathic District Association, and/or organized osteopathic affiliates
5. Public Medallion: Presented for actions conducted by publicly recognized individuals who promote public acceptance and understanding of osteopathic medicine.

Each district may select and present this award to one local physician who has shown: service to the District, community, osteopathic college or teaching program,  and/or exemplary leadership during the year through has gone beyond the expected to promote osteopathic medicine through any vehicle. This award should only be presented when worthy candidates exist. The district shall nominate and submit the name to MAOPS. The award will be presented during the annual conference. Will be bestowed upon those deceased individuals who have: served the osteopathic profession and/or MAOPS or osteopathic medicine with dignity and loyalty, and have dedicated their time and effort to improve the osteopathic profession in Missouri or nationally, or have supported osteopathic medicine in his/her day-to-day life. Presented to an individual or firm who has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to the osteopathic profession, and/or promoted or contributed to medical research, education or public policy to ensure quality health care. Additionally, someone who willingly supported organized osteopathic medicine, and has been nominated by a MAOPS committee, District Association and/or Board of Trustees, and who has been approved by the Board of Trustees To view a list of past award recipients, click here.

The award will be presented to a Missouri U.S. Senator or Representative who has, demonstrated leadership at the federal level on healthcare issues, osteopathic issues, or issues which impact public safety and welfare, only during the years a worthy candidate is identified, and shall be presented at the annual convention of MAOPS, and the recipient must be present to receive the award. To view a list of past award recipients, click here.

This award will be presented to a member of the Missouri House or Senate in those years a worthy candidate is recognized for his/her interest and leadership on health care issues, especially those relating to quality and access of osteopathic medical care to Missourians. This award is presented to a Missouri representative or senator who has demonstrated outstanding efforts in promoting and supporting healthcare legislation, and or legislation supporting public safety and quality health care for Missourians during his/her freshman term in the Missouri Legislature, U.S. House of  Representatives and/or Senate. To view a list of past award recipients, click here.

Life membership can be granted to an actively practicing osteopathic physician upon meeting the criteria set forth in the MAOPS bylaws and approval by the MAOPS Board of Trustees. In order to be considered for Life Membership, a member must have been in practice for at least 40 years (before 1975) or be at least 70 years old. Additionally, candidates must be Full Members, who have been consecutively paying their MAOPS dues for the past 10 years. Click here to view a list of life members.

The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) William L. Wetzel Scholarship Program was created to expose osteopathic students to organized medicine and to develop future MAOPS leaders. Recipients must demonstrate an intent to practice medicine in Missouri, a commitment to the profession, leadership skills, ethical behavior, professionalism, integrity, good moral character, and they must be in good academic standing.
